Hip Hop and homosexuality have endured a long and estranged relationship over the years. While certain artists have decried the LGBT community in the media—Brand Nubian’s Lord Jamar notably detailed his disapproval of homosexuality—even more listeners have adopted phrases like “gay” and “faggot” to lampoon wack rappers. However, Hip Hop has played witness to an increased awareness and support of gay rights in recent years. In addition to vocal support from the likes of Jay Z, A$AP Rocky, openly Gay artists like Mykki Blanco and Le1f have found success in Hip Hop. Still, homosexuality is very much a sensitive topic in Hip Hop.
